Editorial Review of
Business Monitor International
[Category: Global/Comprehensive Country Risk]
Business Monitor International is know for its well-edited and well-written "Monitor" print publications (Latin America Monitor, Asia Monitor, etc.) which each month track the latest developments in emerging markets with analysis and commentary. Also for its weekly financial mini-magazine, which tracks emerging market bonds, equities and forex. The breaking-news focus and mini-magazine format make these unique. BMI has more of a debt/equity market orientation than other firms in this category.
But the conventional wisdom is you've got to have ratings, country reports, and put it all online, and BMI's done so with mixed results. Much of the content is straight from the mini-magazines and looks lost and forlorn as disembodied paragraphs in a complex web interface. Odds are you don't want both tax law news (for direct investors) and elaborate interest rate forecasts (for traders) but you'll get both, and it's hard to separate current events commentary from country background info. The risk ratings are well-designed but seem disconnected from the analysis. We may be living in the e-future, but BMI's print magazines are still its strong suit.
