Editorial Review of
Eurasia Group

[Category: Emerging Markets Analysis]

The Eurasia Group began with a Eurasia focus, of course, but has since spread like the 1918 flu pandemic. The Group pioneered the field of high-end political analysis, delivering customized, often in-person content to Wall Street. This appeals to those who like to feel the merchandise -- the Group's famed for hosting intimate get-togethers where investors rub shoulders with big names in emerging market politics (the Kazakh energy minister, the mayor of Moscow, the foreign minister of Iran).

This is perhaps most useful for those doing deals, but the Group avidly promotes the political analysis it provides -- not strictly political risk, more like market tips. Historically Wall Street's emerging markets research has been produced strictly by economists so a firm run by a poli sci PhD is something of a novelty. A sideline is a political stability index, produced with Deutsche Bank. It can be found lurking in the back pages of the Economist from time to time.

Certainly, Eurasia is a rising star in the industry. Head honcho Ian Bremmer penned a fascinating Slate Diary which plays up their analysis and calls conferences a waste of time. Which is odd, considering how many conferences they sponsor.
