The unofficial journal of US foreign policy, Foreign Affairs has published many a weighty article: the piece that defined the US containment strategy for the Soviet Union, Samuel Huntingon’s “Clash of Civilizations” (the original article – years before it became a book). On the downside, Foreign Affairs wastes lots of space on lightweight pieces by heavyweight people – Condaleeza Rice laying out uninteresting doctrine pre-September 11th. And these essays are sometimes interminable. But it also commissions top scholars to write incisive analysis of current issues, and that’s when the subscription pays off.
