Political Risk in the International Oil and Gas Industry

COUNTRYRISK.COM REVIEW

Good markets tend to grow only where there is stability; but oil flows from wherever God put it. That, in a nutshell, is the curse of the oil and gas industry, which has a history of building large, expensive, immobile installations in the most unstable places on Earth.

Howard Lax does a good job of reviewing the material, and there's a lot of it, as oil and gas firms are some of the most adept political risk managers in the world. He covers the basics of political risk and political risk analysis, some of the industry's political risk history, and then political risk assessment and management. That last bit's the weakest, though -- there's not much "real world" detail on what approaches these firms actually take to assess risks, except for stuff that's been published elsewhere. Perhaps they wouldn't talk?
